Easy ways to save money at home
Saving money is an incredibly important thing. Sometimes, the methods to saving money are actually right before your very eyes. In Winter, the gas and electric bills go through the roof because everyone is trying to keep warm. Now, In January, it is likely that everyone is looking forward to the Spring, not only for the pretty flowers and cherry blossom trees, but also because it will signal the return of the warm weather and a massive drop in appliance bills once more. However, saving money at home actually is an all year round thing; it doesn’t matter whether it is Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter.
Here are some very effective tips that will help you save money at home no matter what season it is.
Wrap up warm
One of the simplest techniques for combating high energy costs at home is also the simplest. Just wrap up warm. Whenever the chill sets in, do not turn to the heating. Instead, head to your wardrobe and wrap up warm. You are at home, it doesn’t matter how stupid you look. Wear layers. Extra pairs of sweat pants or jogging bottoms, extra t-shirts, sweaters and jumpers and to top it off, why not add your dressing gown into the mix? Also, for what it’s worth, if your head, hands and feet are warm, your entire body will be warm. Why not stick a woolly hat on? Seriously, it will save you money, so who cares?
Turn off the gas boiler
The gas boiler can give you grief in winter whether you are using the heating, hot water or not. The gas boiler keeps itself warm and therefore, you will see your gas going down bit by bit even when the boiler isn’t in use. So, just turn it off and you could stand to save a small fortune. In the event you keep it switched on because the heating is on timer, don’t. Just turn it off. You don’t need the heating even when you wake up for work first thing in the morning and it’s freezing. Just hop out of bed – duvet and all – and wrap up warm or jump in the bath until you wake up.
Opt for candles and solar lights
Sometimes, you may use your lights for the most stupid of things, such as going to the bathroom or when you are doing the washing up. If you are doing something incredibly simple and not dangerous, you don’t need the lights on. Of course, it’s always good to be able to see, so instead, opt for some natural light. Solar lamps are cheap and seemingly last forever and will provide you with free light. Similarly, bulk tea light candles can be bought in packs of 100 or more for around £2.00 and one light lasts over 3 hours. Stick this tea light in a jar and it will light up the entire room – thus saving you money on your electricity so easily.
Switch off all appliances when not in use
This is another obvious one, but not everyone does it, even when they know it. Switch off everything when not in use no matter how insignificant it may seem. It all costs extra electricity that you can easily save. Turn everything off at the switch. This includes televisions, games consoles, phone chargers, laptop chargers and even the oven and kitchen appliances. The fridge and freezer is an exception in most cases. You may or may not need it on, though, how full is it? Always ask yourself. Also, consider turning it down a dial or two to save that cheeky bit of extra energy – it can go a long, long way.
Make the most of your place of work
If you are lucky enough to have a job these days, which most people are not, then make the most of it. Your place of work obviously has access to electricity and lots of other stuff, so use theirs instead of yours. If they give you free eta, coffee and milk, go crazy and enjoy it. More importantly, though, if they give you access to electric sockets, use them. You can charge your mobile phone, laptop battery, camera battery and more up at work to save you money. Believe me, over time, this mounts up to an incredible saving.
Opting for cheaper necessities and bargain hunting
Everyone needs the necessities, which are why they are called such. Toilet paper, soap, toilet paste, shampoo, bread, milk and the like are often marketed so that they are expensive. Most things are, in-fact whether food, drink or otherwise. Do not buy into the marketing campaigns of food and drink products. Cheaper alternatives are just as good. Refuse to pay top-prices for things you just throw away such as toilet paper, bin liners and other such things. When it comes to food and drink, eat healthily, but buy the cheaper alternatives. You will have a huge chunk of money left over at the end of your grocery shop. You can get incredibly value for money by opting for the cheaper options or by bargain hunting. So do it.
In this day and age, we all need to save money. Why go through life worrying about money when you don’t have to? And, you really don’t have to. Nobody does. All it takes is a bit of common sense and dedication to being a bit more frugal and enjoying the benefits of doing so. The aforementioned tips will most certainly help you when it comes to cutting costs and saving money at home, so make the most of them and watch your savings jar grow in this apparently apocalyptic 2012 New Year. Happy savings!
