Derren Brown Svengali review
The conjurer himself is back on stage and Derren Brown’s latest reign of trickery and illusionism is about to leave an entire building of 2,999 people in shock and awe. Yes, Derren Brown’s ‘Svengali’ tour drew a full house at Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre and for all of the right reasons. Nobody got the short end of the stick and everybody, especially based on the jaw dropped comments from some of the attendee’s as they were leaving the building, got their money’s worth.
Naturally, in traditional Derren Brown fashion, he drew people from the crowd at random using Frisbees and falling balloons and he put all of his usual tricks to the test including guessing things and even controlling. “’Sinister’ is the word for ‘left arm” proclaimed Derren as he gave a back-story into the art of controlling one’s body and one’s movements. “This is because the left arm is the possession arm. Even right handed people when possessed write with their left arm” he continued as the audience prepared for his fascination which received a huge applause in conclusion once again.
“It just felt weird”, “I couldn’t move at all” and “I couldn’t feel a thing” are just some of the phrases that came out from the mouth of the individual that succumbed to Derren’s whimsy and persuasive charm, not to mention, a special stage treat accompanied by some severely creepy music that is sure to get your heart pumping.
“Svengali” is the name of Derren’s tour and “Svengali” is the main attraction as you will find out for yourselves when you go to see it. Per to Derren’s request, I will not reveal too much about Svengali (the same reason I will not give you any spoilers) but you will certainly not be disappointed. IT has a huge and immersive back story that engrosses the audience from the very beginning of the show and its performance will leave you breathless, peculiarly freaked out and it will probably give you a few innocent nightmares as you lose yourself in its beauty and its mystique.
Svengali is the word that is used to describe a person with evil intent taking control of an innocent person and manipulating them like a puppet.
There is no way that you will be disappointed with Derren Brown’s Svengali tour which continues throughout 2011 and concludes in 2012. There are plenty of number games that Derren plays that will leave you in a true state of shock and awe, especially when he is right, there are plenty of aspects of entertainment both comic and comedic and in true Derren Brown fashion, you will witness some of his best techniques, some of his new techniques and of course, some somewhat sinister and sceptical humour from arguably one of the world’s most genius individuals.
This is not only probably the best stage show you will watch in 2011, but it will leave you in awe for years to come. It is probably the best thing that you will ever see in a Theatre. If you have been considering going to see Derren Brown live, make sure his Svengali tour is the one that you see.

Saw the show last night and I just keep going over everything in my mind! It was fantastic, he is a true showman who had the audience at his feet. You think you have it all worked out and then you remember something and go back to square one! My daughter and I participated in one part of the show that was hilarious, scary and still we can't grasp how he did it. Pure Genius.
btw, what was the celebrity he painted?
