Greatest world champions in history

The WCW world heavyweight championship was the most famous and most prestigious belt in the World Championship Wrestling promotion. It was the most sought after prize by some of the biggest stars in wrestling. The following list contains the names of wrestlers that are arguably the greatest WCW world champions of all time.

Sting

Sting has won the world championship on 14 different occasions in the WCW, WWA, TNA and more. For countless reasons, Sting could be considered the greatest WCW champion of all time. Not only did he defeat some of the biggest names in the sport and defend the title all over the world, but he is also the first man to defeat Hollywood Hogan and put the first nail in the coffin of the New World Order when he claimed the title from Hogan at WCW Starrcade 1997.

Ric Flair

Ric Flair is regarded as one of the greatest world champions of all time and 14 of those world title victories were in WCW. The charismatic 'Nature Boy' was often the subject of WCW storylines. In his time as champion, he feuded with the likes of Hulk Hogan, Sting, 'Macho Man' Randy Savage, Kevin Nash and more. Nobody can deny the fact that Flair deserves a place on the list of greatest WCW champions, afterall, it is his world title.

Hollywood Hogan

'The Immortal' Hulk Hogan bought new meaning to the concept of a heel in wrestling. After being revealed as the third man of the nWo alongside Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, Hulk Hogan became Hollywood Hogan, the most hated wrestler in the world and arguably, one of the greatest world champions. Hogan was often the subject of controversial title victories in WCW includong the 'finger poke of doom' incident with Kevin Nash and the fact that he defeated Randy Savage for the belt after a brutal match just one night after Savage had won the title from Kevin Nash. Despite the controversy, nobody can deny Hogan a place on the list of greatest WCW world champions.

Goldberg

After totalling up a win streak of 173-0 and becoming the most famous wrestler in the world, it was only natural that at some point, Bill Goldberg was going to become world champion. He was loved all over the world and a deafening roar sounded when Goldberg hit his signature spear and jackhammer moves on Hollywood Hogan and got the three count to claim his first world title. Now, the most skin bumping entrance in wrestling had additional sparkle; the WCW world title. While Goldberg's title run wasn't as long as others, it was a title victory that changed WCW and the atmosphere surrounding the build up to his main event match, not to mention, the atmosphere in the building when the millions of fans were chanting his name was truly irreplaceable. Love him or hate him, everything about Goldberg leading up to and following his WCW championship victory gives him a worthwhile place on this list.

Chris Benoit

The world championship victory enjoyed by the late 'Canadian Crippler' at the expense of Sid Vicious may have been short lived considering he left the WCW for the WWE the next night, but his place on this list is more symbolic than based on success. WCW had a reputation of focusing on the older veterans rather than young, up and coming talent. Benoit's title victory over Sid Vicious however symbolised a better future for WCW and its younger talent. Apart from Benoit's, the only other title victories from younger talents that would follow were Jeff Jarrett, Booker T and Scott Steiner.

The WCW world heavyweight championship was held by some of the biggest names in wrestling history and the aforementioned names are arguably some of the greatest. Others include the likes of Kevin Nash, The Giant, Lex Luger, Randy Savage, Diamond Dallas Page and Sid Vicious. Who truly is the greatest WCW champion of all time?

For the most part I will agree with your list but I think that Flair should rank above Sting just simply because of all the BS he had to go through plus the transition from NWA to WCW.
