Savage and Hogan feuded over the world heavyweight title on several occasions, the last one being in 1999 when they battled in a gruesome match on WCW Nitro with weapons, tables and plenty of high octane, hatred and history fueled action which saw Hogan win the belt from Savage shortly after "Macho Man" defeated Kevin Nash for the title.
Recent Randy Savage news
Savage had suddenly emerged in the world of professional wrestling in late 2010 which spawned rumors about his return to the sport for the first time in 6 years. These rumors continued leading up to his untimely death.
Savage had apparently signed a legends deal with the WWE thus affiliating the two parties for the first time in over a decade. Savage went on to appear at conventions and even cut a vintage promo for WWE.com where he promoted his latest WWE action figure releases.
The legends deal was expected to see Savage inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame or even a TV return in some way, shape or form.
Hulk Hogan on countless occasions since Savage re-emerged had stated that he would love to get his old friend, 'Macho Man' on board in TNA Wrestling, further fueling rumors that Savage would be on the verge of a wrestling comeback in 2011 and beyond.
Just over a month ago, Savage's brother, Lanny Poffo, added further fuel to the fire when he stated that Randy Savage would have a major announcement soon, thus again raising questions about a potential Macho Man return to the squared circle.
A tribute to "Macho Man" Randy Savage
Every individual of any age whether young or old that calls themselves a fan of professional wrestling should have the respect to look into the sport to see its finest legends. "Macho Man" Randy Savage is a name that every fan must know like a book because he is one of the most important names in history.
Randy Savage has a storied history in the world of professional wrestling. He is a six time world champion having won the belt in both the WWE and the WCW. He has had timeless and historic feuds with some of the biggest names in wrestling including Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Sting, Kevin Nash, Jake Roberts, Ricky Steamboat and more.
On top of that, Savage is a pop culture icon. His over zealous, crazy and truly psychotic wrestling persona is one of the few that could truly send a shiver of adrenaline and fear down your spine depending on whether he was wrestling as a fan favorite or a villain. Savage is also recognizable for his distinct, unique baritone voice that was the main feature of his cryptic, flawless promos., segments and microphone work, the same voice that created such iconic quotes as his "ooooh yeah!" , "dig it!" And countless amazing moments.
In the 1990's when he made the jump to WCW, Savage became progressively psychotic as a character and many would argue that this is when he was at his best. He has years of in-ring experience behind him, he was well established and he had just successfully progressed into the most important era in wrestling, the monday night wars.
Savage became an important figure in the WCW more than ever because the WCW was in the process of building up new stars while still needing legends with well established star power in order to succeed. Savage became one of the most popular stars in WCW as a face and heel and his new-found fame became even more world renowned to a brand new generation.
Savage became the star of "slim jim" commercials and plenty more WCW related advertising, promotion and media and he had the PWI feud of the year in 1997 after a brutal, personal and ground-breaking rivalry with Diamond Dallas page.
Savage's success and fame continued well into the late 90's where he feuded with Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash before leaving WCW. Savage then released a rap CD entitled "Be a Man" in 2003 before returning to wrestling in 2004 for TNA Wrestling where he feuded with Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Jeff Jarrett as a surprise team member alongside his partners, Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles.
Movie fans may also remember Randy Savage for his movie roles. His most famous one was as wrestler "Bonesaw McGraw" in the first Spiderman movie. More recently, he voiced the character "Thug" in the children's movie, "Bolt".
It was expected that Savage would make a return to wrestling in some caliber in 2011 given all of the recent cryptic news stories and signs in regards to his status.
Recognizing a true legend
"Macho Man" Randy Savage has given so much to professional wrestling, much more than many other wrestlers have, past or present. His legacy is one that truly will live forever because he is one of the men that influenced the sport today as we know it. Randy Savage along with Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior and a few others started the "pop culture" wrestling of the 1980's with their flash characters and huge, hulking, almost comic-book like bodies.
While Hogan and Warrior joined wrestling for that reason, what many people do not realize is that Randy Savage did not. Randy Savage had already been wrestling several years before achieving his worldwide critical acclaim and fame as a WWE superstar.
Randy Savage is a second generation performer. He is the son of Angelo Poffo, a WCW Hall of Fame legend. For years, Savage was managed in Memphis by his father where he initially began to develop his crazed Macho Man character. One of his most publicized feuds in the territory years was against WWE Hall of Famer, Jerry "The King" Lawler. The two had several brutal and person matches and it was here that Randy Savage's skills began to shine.
He was much more than a gimmick; he was a wrestler through and through. It was in his blood; it flowed through his veins like oxygen and when he was in that ring, when he was on camera and when he was in character, he was unstoppable. He was destined for success.
He gained worldwide acclaim for his colorful robes, his colorful, crazy personality, his rhythms and rhymes and his all around charisma and prowess, but also for his wrestling ability. He was quick, he was powerful and when it came down to pure wrestling talent and athleticism, there were very few that could match him in terms of his in-ring performances. That is why his matches with the likes of Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat still to this day are regarded as some of the greatest of all time, because these three men helped put the wrestling in wrestling during the 80's and the 90's.
Savage didn't slow down either. He was one of the legends that was going stronger than ever and continuing to improve his game well into the 1990's. That is why he was still such a big evolving star when the Monday Night Wars and the Attitude Era came around, because he truly was getting better and better, each and every week.
The Evolution of The Macho Man in the 1990's
It is fairly difficult to forget the evolution of Randy Savage in the 1990's. He was a huge star in the WWF until he left and when he joined WCW, he was just as big of a star as he was. Nothing had changed except his pay check. Everybody knew who he was, everybody respected him and everybody knew he had a bright future in WCW, and surely, he did.
Then 1996 came around and everyone began to see a brand-new Macho Man. This was the first stage of his evolution. He secluded himself from everyone else, he became dark and mysterious and progressively insane. When the New World Order invaded, Savage was a lone man on a mission, but nobody knew what that mission was. Was he with the nWo or was he against them?
Who can forget that night at an outdoor WCW show in 1996 when the nWo invaded the building only to try and escape in a limousine. Randy Savage, darting like the mad-man he was, dived onto the limo as it sped off into the distance. He wasn't heard of again for some time, but when he came back, the next stage of his evolution had begun.
Savage was a member of the nWo Black and White and the nWo Wolfpac, both of which were the two main incarnations of the most dominant and historic faction in the history of professional wrestling and Macho Man was a part of the movement that shaped the future of wrestling as we know it today. Again, whether wrestling as a face or a heel, everybody knew who the Macho Man was. In fact, throughout the most of the 1990's, nobody knew whose side he was on, even when he was on a side. He was always a lone wolf above anything else and this earned him worldwide acclaim and recognition.
