The Sega Master System is an iconic video game console from the 8 bit era of gaming. Despite being grossly out dated, the console still has a cult following, not to mention, countless classic titles that still to this day can prove to be a flawless way to pass the time.

1) Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap

Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap still to this day is the most critically acclaimed title in the illustrious series. The first level of the game actually is the last level of the second game and this is because it directly follows on from the last in a flawless way. Players will find themselves transformed into Lizard Man, Pirahna Man, Hawk Man, Lion Man and Mouse Man as they try to rid themselves from the curse of the Dragon that has been placed upon them. Players can save and load their game via a password system, complete plenty of vicious dungeons and kill gruesome enemies and even purchase new weapons, armour and items, even rarer ones if you manage to find the secret doors and entrances scattered throughout the game.

2) Golden Axe Warrior

Golden Axe Warrior is known globally as one of the best Sega Master System titles of all time. However, at the time of its release, it also achieved great controversy that left it slightly unknown to gamers. It looks like and plays like the original Legend of Zelda title from the NES. However, do not let that put you off. Golden Axe Warrior has its own unique and immersive storyline, plenty of unique weapons, items, monsters, allies enemies and maps and a spin-off story from one of Sega's greatest arcade games, Golden Axe. Players will lose themselves in this masterful adventure RPG master work.

3) Alex Kidd in Miracle World

Alex Kidd in Miracle world is often the game that Master System players remember. This is because it was often built in to the Master System console. In this game, as the name suggests, you control a boy called Alex Kidd who was once Sega's mascot before Sonic came around and you have to control him in an awesome and addictive platformer from level to level. You can ride motorcycles, drive helicopters and play rock, scissors paper with enemy bosses in a game called "Janken". This is another master work on the Master System that is not to be missed.

4) Psycho Fox

Psycho Fox is a very unique yet very peculiar platformer title. It is known for its extreme difficulty. You have the ability to control 4 different characters; Psycho Fox who is your all-rounder and main character, a hippo which is slow but can smash through boulders, a monkey that can jump incredibly high and a tiger that is incredibly fast. You have to time your movements and time your jumps, use the characters to your advantage to find short cuts and get secrets such as extra items and extra lives and more. You will never play a platformer like Psycho Fox to say the least.

5) Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

Alex Kidd makes his Master System return in Shinobi World. His girlfriend has been kidnapped and only Alex can save the day. You will learn techniques and put them to the test, you will try to defeat hordes of Ninja enemies along the way and you will use your environment and your weapons to your advantage. Many fans see this as the pinnacle of the series for its uniqueness and how separate it is from the rest of the series. It is truly not one to be missed.

6) Sonic Chaos

Sonic Chaos is by far one of the most difficult Sonic games, but also one of the most entertaining. Originally unique to the Master System, it was eventually released on the Sega Game Gear also. Sonic Chaos allows you to control Sonic or Tails as you go through several beautifully designed and increasingly difficult levels and stages. You will find yourself gritting your teeth as you try to work out the strategy to defeat bosses or get past certain parts of the level to find secrets but when you do and when you finally, after endless game overs and continues, complete it, you will certainly realize that this is by far one of the greatest Sonic The Hedgehog titles ever conceived.

My younger brother had one of these consoles. I LOVED Alex Kidd in Miracle World - spent hours and hours on it.

Nice hub.
